What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme which helps organisations protect themselves against common cyber threats. It sets out a baseline of technical controls to secure networks and data, reducing the risk of cyberattacks.
Certification comes in two levels: Cyber Essentials (self-assessed) and Cyber Essentials Plus (independently verified).
Achieving certification demonstrates a commitment to cybersecurity and reassures clients and partners. Your business has also been added to the NCSC database of businesses that have passed Cyber Essentials.
The scheme is built around five key areas:
- Firewalls – Configuring these to create a barrier between trusted and untrusted networks.
- Secure Configuration – Ensuring devices and software are set up securely to reduce vulnerabilities.
- User Access Control – Managing who can access data and services to minimise exposure.
- Malware Protection – Installing and maintaining anti-malware software to defend against malicious code.
- Patch Management – Keeping software and systems up to date to fix security flaws.
